Rather shrewd of you. The first blow always merits a disadvantage since it gives away a player's style.

Very well then.

But the truth is, it suits me better, too.

[She pauses while she helps to reset the board, then.]

You must have trouble finding suitable partners, to be playing alone.

That's true. The board is a tool for strategic study. It wasn't always a plaything. Generals of yore used it to plan battles. I don't see it as a "toy" and I consider it derogatory that using it means saying that you're "playing."

Then again, I was never one for convention.

Certain variations were developed to accommodate different types of battle, as well.

However, chess is also something that helps me to relax and unwind while I apply my mind to it.

I merely see it as a means to help me plan my tactics whether social, political or on the battlefield.

[She lifts up the white queen.]

The most powerful piece on the board.

And yet its real life counterparts are so under appreciated. Take Henry VIII for example. His first queen, Catalina de Aragón, led his troops against the Scots at the Battle of Flodden. But all she's remembered for is how she was spurned in favor of Anne Boleyn...

She wasn't only great for that victory. She was a great patron of learning and education, too; for women as well, which was unusual in that day.

However, don't overlook the knight, either. Its mobility allows it to reach otherwise unreachable places.

Good of you to know. Most people seem to prefer Anne to Catalina though. I see them as misguided. Anne met her end at the executioner's sword for a reason. Overconfidence and too much trust gets you killed.

As for knights...I've met a few. Their mobility is useless without proper guidance.

You seem to enjoy history. I'm glad we met for this.

Anne was vibrant. It's a good quality. [But being said as all but an excuse, it's clear she prefers the studious Katherine as far as that goes.] There are movements to rehabilitate her reputation.

[She makes her move, a strong opening.]

Quite.

All individuals have good points and she was no exception. However, an excess of confidence leads to defeat. She was good.

[Ami falls to a brief silence, used to silence throughout a match. Normally, she'd play with more aggressive and risky strategies. But she is not a fool; she will not sacrifice her pieces for nothing in return. And with a sharp opponent like Dorothy, she will do better to be more careful, more thoughtful. The time to strike will come - and then she will do it swiftly and mercilessly.]

[Dorothy's always been chatty. She talked all throughout her fencing match with Quatre before plunging her sword into him.]

Cautious, are we? And here I thought I sensed a warrior's spirit...

You're more than you seem. Explain.

Now where would the fun be in that?

[She is, of course, referring to how ZERO touched her mind. Everyone whose ever been in proximity with ZERO has some degree of heightened perception.]

And I think you may perceive this as a negligible loss but the pawn is widely underestimated. It can only move forward but, once it reaches the end of the board, it can be anything the player wants it to be.

[She couples this with taking a pawn herself - trading small pieces is typical at this stage.]

Anger makes fools of us all.

But sometimes it is better to be the fool than the king. Thought that depends on the type of fool. Familiar with King Lear?

[She's lived the past years of her life having to prove herself to the Dark Kingdom, having to prove the strength of her hatred to the sailor senshi. Being talked down to will not make her happy. But as the subject shifts, she relents.]

I've read most of Shakespeare's known work, in English.

[She specifies this mostly to say she's truly familiar with Shakespeare rather than a translation; but of course the pride is there, too. For a non-native speaker, learning her way around older English had been a feat, but one worth undertaking.]

Stating the obvious?

Admirable. There's no true appreciation in reading it any other way.

[True to her word, the comments may irk her, but they do not seem to distract her from her purpose. She seems as sharp as ever as she makes her moves, setting up a strategy that won't become fully apparent for awhile - hopefully long enough to get them into a strong end game she can make a clean sweep of.]

[Dorothy makes her next move in silence, smirking. Well, this was certainly fun. She had no intention of winning. The game she had earlier played with herself had been a strategy for guaranteeing a stalemate. She simply wanted to see if she could get the same results against another human being.]

[She is a chess champion herself, after all. And this goes against what Ami clearly said she wanted; of course she remarks on it.]
